Barrett Principal Selection Process
As you all know, last Monday, Superintendent Pat Murphy and Assistant Superintendent Betty Hobbs met with members of the Barrett community to discuss the new Principal selection process. On Wednesday April 17, we had a follow-up meeting to further discuss the strengths of our school, the challenges, and the attributes desired in a new principal. We had a focused, small group discussion brainstorming those critical attributes and developed interview questions. I strongly encourage everyone to provide feedback using the form found on the home page of the Barrett website. This information will be used in the Principal selection process.
The goal of the meeting was also to clearly define how we will select the parent representatives who will sit on the Principal Selection Committee. As you know, four parents or guardians, selected by the PTA can participate in the Principal Selection Committee. These four parents will play an active role in the interview and selection process by participating in the second round interviews, tentatively scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The PTA is committed to ensuring that this process is clear, transparent, inclusive and open. Below please find the plan for selecting the four parent representatives.
- One member of the PTA Board will be on the Principal Selection Committee.
- As you all know, 40% of our school population is Hispanic. It is critically important that the parent representatives reflect our community. Therefore, we will have a Latino parent on the Principal Selection Committee. The very involved group of Latina Friday Morning Moms selected Tania Herrera as their representative. She happens to also be on the PTA Board as one of our Vice Presidents for Latino Relations.
- We will select one upper grade (Grade 3-5) parent and one lower grade (K-2) parent from the pool of parents who have submitted their names. Any parent or guardian interested in being considered for the Principal Selection Committee is encouraged to fill out the attached application and submit it directly to me by April 26th. Members of the PTA Executive Board will select the two parents.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Barrett is an extraordinary community with a great reputation for parental involvement. I encourage you to get involved in this exciting process!
Thank you!
