I hope the New Year has started off well for everyone!  My students have been working hard since they returned from Winter Break!

Writing- Students have started editing and revising writing that they have written over the last several weeks.  They are choosing the ones they want to include in their treasures books, and are copying them into their books as they are ready.  Treasure Books will go out to the publisher in March and we will have them displayed for you to see at the Arts and Writer’s Fair on April 26th!

Science Fair- We will begin work on our class science fair project in the next week so it will be ready. We are very excited about it so I will include pictures soon.

For career week, we listened to Mr Johnston talk about his job as an environmental engineer at EPA. He explained the importance of keeping our water clean and how different kinds of pollution can effect our earth
    .2
2 For example, how polluted a river can get without laws for pollution control, and how much better the same river got after good anti-pollution laws were in place.
    2  Thank you Mr. Johnston.

    December 15-19, 2008

This week did not follow our usual routine, but our week was full of exciting events.  We went swimming everyday at Washington-Lee High School and had a great time.  We rode the bus, got to experience a real high school locker room, got a lot of exercise in the pool, and learned about swimming safety and some basic swimming techniques. At the end of each day’s lesson, we had free swimming time to have some fun.

In Discovery Lab, we did experiments making a sail for a sailboat using foil, tissue paper, wax paper, and straws. We could only use 3 items and had to design and test our sails to see how they worked out. It was fun and required team work.

We saw a fantastic version if Hansel and Gretel put on by Theatro de la Luna. It was a bilingual version, mostly in Spanish, and the actors were great. Parts were a little scary, but parts were also very funny so even though we had all read the story before, we loved this version very much.

Next week, we will be having a game day on Tuesday so everyone may bring in a favorite game to play in the classroom.  This should be fun and may help with our excitement about the upcoming holidays.

We counted money to buy school supplies from our classroom store.

We used a magnet and a string to "fish" for our spelling word cards.
It took a lot of patience and we had to be very careful not to drop it!

After we finally "caught" our word, we ran up to write it on the board.

    December 8-12

We had an active week with more interesting work in Math, a fun Gingerbread Cookie activity with Ms. Nancy and Ms. Lindsay, and the Winter Concert put on by the 5th Grade Chorus. We also had some extra help in the classroom from Ms. Maria. Although she was only here for a week, she worked us with on all kinds of things and was a great help.

We are still working on Money this week; identifying, counting, sorting, and playing fun games with it. Next week, we will start on studying Time; telling time to the hour, half-hour, quarter-hour, and eventually minutes.

Remember, next week is our turn to go swimming at the new indoor pool at Washington-Lee High School. Students need to bring a swimsuit and towel in a plastic bag to school each day.  We will leave on the bus at 9:30 each day and not return until lunchtime.

Printed copies of the Gingerbread cookie activity and directions for making the cookies are in the Friday Folder.
