Since late October, a group of sixteen 4th graders have been eating lunch in the library with Mrs. Fleming on Fridays to read and discuss potential 2008 Caldecott winners. After considering about 20 possible titles, the group voted on January 11 and decided that the Caldecott Medal for “best illustrated children’s book” should go to I’m theBiggest Thing in the Ocean by Kevin Sherry. The Honor books chosen were: Henry’s Freedom Boxby Kadir Nelson, Dog and Bear: Two Friends, Three Storiesby Laura Vaccaro Seeger and Hickory Dickory Dockby Keith Baker. The students enjoyed the selection process and learning about color, shape, line and other design elements used in book illustration.
