Congratulations to Randolph 5th grader, Mecca Whiters-Russell, from Mrs. Penning's class, who was awarded 2nd place in the girl's elementary division of the Arlington Public Schools 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest.

Eighteen winners were selected out of almost 600 entries, and the six first-place winners will read their winning entries and be presented awards in recognition of their achievements at Arlington County's 39th annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The ceremony will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.

This year, student essays completed the opening statement: “If Dr. King were here today, I would say...”  The essay contest was open to all Arlington elementary, middle and high school students.

Hooray Mecca!
