APS recently decided that Jefferson and Kenmore may not accept any transfers for the 2015-16 school year. The reason for the decision according to Ms. Cintia Johnson, Assistant Superintendent for APS, is the school administration's interpretation of School Board Policy 25-2.2 Middle & High Schools:
“The number of students attending a middle or high school from outside its attendance boundary will not exceed a total of five percent of the receiving school’s total enrollment based on the prior year’s September Membership Report, with the exception of International Baccalaureate transfers to Washington-Lee, Immersion transfers to Gunston and Wakefield, and transfers to the Wakefield AP Network. Any middle or high school where projected enrollment within the next three years exceeds the facility’s capacity will not be eligible to receive transfers. (p. 3 of 13)”
When questions were raised about the policy, Ms. Johnson said that parents had made valid points and an adjustment is under consideration. The School Board is planning to act by providing a waiver to School Board Policy 25-2.2 as an interim solution. She expects the Board to address the issue very soon, probably by the end of this week.New: 1st Quarter Honor’s Breakfast this Friday, November 21st!
