A Note from the PTA President

GREETINGS!

I hope to see you this coming Monday May 7 for our last PTA meeting of the year at 7:30 in the cafeteria.  We will thank our “graduating” parents – John and Mary Vihstadt, Patty Petroccione, Ted Stump, Carolyn Marsh, Mikki Atsatt and Suzanne Gesin and welcome our incoming officers.

Our special guest will be Stephanie Meadows, health teacher at Yorktown who lead us in a discussion at this time last year on how parents can survive “spring fever” – we have warm weather, prom, graduation and undeveloped brains all coming together in the same month.

This will be the last meeting for me and our Secretary, Dina Land.  All of the officers are grateful for the terrific support provided by the parents and faculty at YHS.  Thanks to you we had a record number of PTA members –773 – and we surpassed the fundraising goal of our “Phantom Pfling” fundraiser and were able to put these funds to good use in a variety of projects.

The 45 leaders of PTA committees had a busy year.  This year they set up online forms for Phantom Phling contributions and volunteer sign ups; added a parent email section to the phone directory; facilitated communication between the counseling department and the Arlington Community Foundation to insure that all PTA funded counseling scholarships were awarded; encouraged student involvement by sponsoring a student initiated Personal Safety class and hosted the President of the Virginia Board of Education at one of our meetings and our school board liaison at another.  Whew!

This good work will continue with our terrific slate of officers for next year:

  • Herman Narcho - President

  • Patti Rosenberg – Internal Vice President
  • Emily Nack – External Vice President
  • Darci Niestroy – Treasurer
  • Lynn Stone – Recording Secretary

Best wishes,

Mary Waters

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL DATE CHANGE

Due to conflicts with the date the high schools could get Constitution Hall this year and exam schedules, the School Board voted to end school for high school students one day early this year – a change from June 20th to June 19th. Exam schedules will be adjusted accordingly. Graduation remains scheduled for Yorktown on June 20th at 3 PM.
