It is a privilege to be writing this letter of introduction as Tuckahoe’s new principal. I have enjoyed working with you over the last five years as Assistant Principal, and am excited about continuing on in this new capacity. I am appreciative of the support so many people have offered during this somewhat expedited journey, and I look forward to what we will accomplish together moving forward.
For those new to the community, my family and I live in Reston where my wife and I have three children, a rising college sophomore, rising high school sophomore, and rising first grader. We are also tenants to a number of cats who rule the house quite firmly. Around school I can often be found with my camera and/or a cup of coffee, and our students will tell you that I am proud of a fairly extensive tie collection. This will be my 25th year in APS, and my experiences have included elementary classroom teaching, curriculum and instruction work, and school administration.
While I am grateful that my learning curve is slightly smaller than it would be if I were joining a new community, I know there is still a lot to learn and a busy summer of work ahead. I am committed to offering leadership that will facilitate a school environment that provides the best possible academic instruction for each student. I pride myself on being responsive, in that I follow up with people in a timely manner and am open to hearing ideas and concerns. I always ask myself what is in the best interest of the students, and have found that this has served me as a good barometer for deciding on a course of action to take.
I believe that it is important to maintain the processes, traditions, and culture that have made Tuckahoe the special place that it is. At the same time, there is always room for growth, improvement, and progress. My challenge this coming year will be to strike a balance between honoring what has worked well while beginning to introduce some ideas to take us even further. I plan to work closely with PTA leadership and the parent community as we start this new phase together.
Over the coming weeks I will be scheduling a number of small gatherings to meet with parents and talk further. I believe several smaller events are more productive than a large one, as I’d like the opportunity to have some time to talk to all in attendance. More information will be sent out through SchoolTalk as those are scheduled.
Once again, I could not be more honored to take on this new role, and I know that working together as a team Tuckahoe is guaranteed to continue Rocking.
Enjoy your summer, and I hope to see many of you soon.
