When you use a source (a book, a website, an encyclopedia, etc.) and use
  • someone's words
  • someone's ideas or opinions
  • facts that are not common knowledge
  • pictures or images
in a paper or presentation, you must cite the source--give credit where credit is due.  You cite to give credit to the work and ideas of others and to avoid plagiarism.
