Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology is the Governor's School for Science and Technology in Northern Virginia.  Although located in Fairfax County, admission is open to Arlington students who are highly motivated  with a genuine interest in the biological, physical, mathematical, technological, and computer sciences.

Students are selected through a very competitive admissions process and should demonstrate the following characteristics: 

  • High ability, aptitude, and interest in math, science, and technology.
  • Intellectual curiosity and self-motivation to pursue scientific research.
  • A desire to be challenged with an extensive curriculum focused in math, science, and technology.
  • The highest academic and personal integrity.

Your student may pick up an application from me beginning September 23, 2013. Applications will be due back to me no later than October 18, 2013 4:00.  Applications are available online at www.TJAdmissions.org and a fee of $90 is charged to take the test.   

The Admission test is given on Saturday, December 7 in the morning at Swanson.  .

International Baccalaureate Information

The IB Program is a rigorous, two-year comprehensive  program for highly motivated, high achieving students in  grades 11 and 12, at Washington-Lee High School.  The program  seeks to prepare students for post-secondary study through courses and instructional techniques that emphasize:

  • Critical thinking
  • Application of knowledge
  • An interdisciplinary approach with a strong international focus


Students apply for the I.B. program in grade 8.  Candidates should have completed Algebra  and--- either French 2 , Spanish 2 , Chinese 2, Arabic 2 or Latin I by the end of grade 8. 

If your student is interested in the I.B. program,  I strongly recommend you and your child  attend  the information night on Wednesday, December 4 at 7 pm at Washington-Lee High School.  Applications are available on the W-L  I.B. website  beginning October 28 and must be delivered to W-L by January 17, 2014 at 4 pm.

If W-L is not your home school, your parent/guardian must attend a high school information session at both your neighborhood  school and the W-L.  See dates below.
