What is Character Education?
Character Education is the deliberate effort to develop virtues that are good for the individual and good for society.
School staff invites parents, interested citizens, and community organizations to engage students in activities and discussions that promote greater understanding and application of the six character pillars. Please contact the Department of Student Services for a list of suggested children's books that illustrate the six pillars or ideas for character development that can be implemented at home!
October's pillar is Respect
Respect is:
- Treating others the way you want to be treated
- Having consideration for others
- Treating people with civility, courtesy, and dignity
- Being accepting of differences.
- Solving problems without violence
- Not ridiculing, embarrassing, or hurting others.
Remember, you should respect others AND yourself.
November's pillar is Responsibility
Responsibility is:
- Doing what needs to be done.
- Being reliable and dependable
- Being accountable for your actions; not making excuses or blaming others.
- Using good judgment; thinking through the consequences of your actions.
- Exercising self- control.
Remember, be responsible in AND out of the classroom.
December's pillar is Caring
Caring is:
- Being responsive to others concerns and needs of others.
- Treating others with kindness, concern, and generosity.
- Being charitable.
- Giving of yourself for the benefit of others.
- Not being mean, cruel, or insensitive.
Remember, you don't have to show you care with material items. You can give by volunteering somewhere, making a card for someone who is in need or even just telling someone that you care. You can care for people, animals, and the environment- just to name a few!
January's pillar is Fairness
Fairness is:
- Treating others the way you want to be treated.
- Treating people equally and impartially.
- Considering the feelings of all people who will be affected by your actions.
- Being open minded and reasonable
- Playing by the rules.
- Not taking advantage of others.
February's pillar is Citizenship
Citizenship is:
- Being socially responsible - civic responsibility
- Doing your part for the common good
- Making our democracy work by voicing your opinions, voting, and participating in the decision making process.
- Performing community service.
- Helping to take care of the environment
- Obeying the laws.
March's pillar is Trustworthiness
Trustworthiness is:
- Keeping promises: being a person of your word.
- Reliability: following through on commitments
- Honesty.
- Keeping a secret: not betraying a trust
- Integrity: not caving in to temptation
- Loyalty: when appropriate.
