Students in the third grade explore the world around them through reading, math, art, drama, writing and technology. They are a community of learners. By anchoring their learning in visual arts and drama, students develop a deeper understanding of concepts in their curriculum. They grasp vocabulary more easily and learn the benefits of cooperative work. Collaboration is constantly encouraged and conversation is fostered. The annual visit to the Outdoor Lab for our study of simple machines is an integral part of the hands-on inquiry approach that is part of our math and science curriculum. The third grade teachers work collaboratively with each other, technology coaches and the Arts Coaches, Melanie and Sean Layne, provided for us through our CETA program with the Kennedy Center, Changing Education Through the Arts.
