First and second grade students are exploring the world of drama, music, and dance. We are currently creating three musicals entitled “Go Fish!", "Bugz", and "How Does Your Garden Grow?". We will perform them for our friends and families at the Project Gift Showcase Nights throughout this year. Students have been working on their presentation skills such as speaking loudly, clearly and slowly, using expression in their voice and body, eye contact, using a microphone, and rehearsing ahead of time. These skills will be important throughout their life. By starting now, we are able to build their confidence and help eliminate fears of public speaking. I am very proud of the students as they go through this process of creating a play and bringing it to a performance level. I watch them grow as singers, dancers, speakers, actors, and performers. All of their hard work will be worth it in the end. In the past, we have performed "It's a Jungle Out There", "Circus, Circus", "Nuts!", "E-I-E-I-Oops!", and "Once Upon a Lily Pad".
Last year, the fifth graders staged and choreographed their own musical entitled "Dig It" that was performed at the June Project GIFT Showcase Night. The students brought history to life through dancing skeletons in Ethiopia and dancing mummies in Egypt. This musical took us through ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece and Rome. In the past, fifth graders have also produced musicals about Westward Expansion and American History.
