Social Studies

History Alive

At Abingdon, teachers use a History Alive! approach to teach social studies. "History Alive! is a series of instructional practices used by teachers that allow students with diverse learning styles to "experience" history. These teaching methods were developed by teachers who carefully and throughtfully combined educational research and theory with the realities of classroom teaching. Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, Elizabeth Cohen's research on cooperative groupwork, and Jerome Bruner's notion of the spiral curriculum form the theoretical backbone for the History Alive! approach" (History Alive! Engaging all learners in the diverse classroom, 2nd. Ed. [Teacher's curriculum Institute, 1999], 3).

We also teach social studies through arts integration and our Living Histories, Communications, and Archictecture learning wheels.
