Welcome! Information for Parents New to the Bands and Color Guard

The Washington-Lee Band program is a highly successful amalgamation of many groups: Marching Band and Color Guard, Symphonic Band, Concert Bands, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Big Band, and Jazz Lab.  As new parents to band there are several important things to be aware of.  We have a very active parent booster system that allows all of these bands to operate and perform successfully!  Participation and volunteering for events is crucial and we would like all parents to participate if possible.  This provides a great opportunity to not only meet other band parents but watch your kids while they develop and grow as performers.

Key Points:

1.        All communication about concerts, events, fundraising, volunteer needs, and weekly schedule is given through the WL Band list serve. Please join the list serve by sending an e-mail to wlbandemail@gmail.com, asking to join. (You may also contact the Webmaster, Kurt Schuler, directly at his personal e-mail,kschuler@the-cfs.org.)

2.       Volunteers are needed throughout the year, but mostly from August until November, during Marching Band/Color Guard and major fundraising events.  We use the Web site Sign-Up Genius to fill these positions and they will be sent out prior to events on the list serve.  Please take a look at the Sign-Up Genius request as they come out and see if you are available to help.

3.       Here is a general list of volunteer opportunities throughout the year so you can be aware of when things are coming up:

August to Early September

Marching Band/Color Guard Camp - parents provide and serve food for dinner daily during band camp to give the kids the strength to work through those first few weeks of band before school starts.   It’s a new experience and it’s a comfort to those that are to see parents’ commitment to the program. We will also have a Tag Day envelope stuffing evening during one night of band camp to prep envelopes for distribution on Tag Day (see below)

September to October

*Tag Day (first Saturday after school starts) - this major fundraiser requires parents to drive Marching Band students around neighborhoods from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Parents are also needed to count money and serve pizza to the kids when they return. This fundraiser helps offset the costs of the spring Band trip and other expenses required to participate in competitions.

*Marching Band/Color Guard performs at Home Football Games - parents are needed to help with Pit Percussion logistics and to serve pizza, water, and cookies to the Band and Color Guard during the third quarter. Parents are also needed to sell nuts at home football games to promote the fruit and nut sales.  This job offers free entry to football games for those volunteering!

*Marching Band Competitions (Saturdays) - parents are needed to chaperone, assist with uniforms and assist with Pit Percussion logistics during these away competitions. There are only a limited number of openings for these jobs and they fill quickly so if you are interested in seeing the competitions up close please make sure to sign up early.
