The arts curriculum provides opportunity to learn about core subject areas in creative and interesting ways. We might, for instance, use what we have learned about plants to create a stunning collage portrait of a flower.
The art curriculum helps us celebrate festive days and holidays. We create decorations for parties and the prom. We celebrate Black History Month with a unit on African-American music and composers. We explore lifetime leisure activities such as the unit on knitting. And we incorporate Occupational and Speech Therapy into the arts curriculum to make the arts accessible and enjoyable to every child at Stratford.
In addition to classroom activities, the Humanities Project of Arlington County Schools funds three live performances each school year. This year at Stratford we have seen the a capella singing group Almost Recess, a mime theater performance, and an African Dance and Drum troupe called Kan Kouran. The arts are an important part of what we do at Stratford.
