Welcome to the Mariners Team!
I will be sending out periodic emails to update you on the activities for the Mariners Team. We are off to a great start and enjoyed meeting you on Back-To-School Night. We hope you will come to our
parent conference day on October 18th between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM or October 19th between 7:30 AM and 11:00 AM. Ms. Hutto and Ms. David will only be available on Friday between 7:30AM and 2:30 PM. We will have arena style conferences where we will be in our classrooms and welcome you to stop by for a 5 minute chat. If you are unable to attend and feel you need to talk to one of your child's teachers please feel free to email the teacher directly. The students will write a reflection on their progress so far in seventh grade and you are welcome to pick those up from the administrators before you go to the conferences.
You will also receive information about our 7th grade Shadowing Day on November 9th during the conferences. Shadowing Day is a day when the students "shadow" (follow) someone to work that you would arrange.
We have a team home page at http://apsva.us/domain/3071. This page has our Tutorial Schedule and other great information about our team. Tutorials are held Thursday after school from 2:30 - 3:30. This is a chance for students to have a quiet place to do homework or get help from a teacher.
Please check Blackboard for daily listings of homework, especially if your child is out of school.
We have a lot of wonderful events over the next couple of months. Below you will find out what is happening in the curriculum areas and for the entire seventh grade.
The entire seventh grade will be making sandwiches for the organization So Others May Eat on October 29th during STAR. We will have a speaker on October 17th from SOME to explain to the students the importance of this service project. We will be sending home more information about this wonderful event.
Science:
We are completing our Yeast Lab (the room looks so festive) and will be performing several small experiments to reinforce the different components of science experimentation.
Math:
The Continental Math League (CM) contests will be given in November.
English:
Students have been working on various reading and writing tasks, so that their teachers can assess where everyone is starting out. Students completed a writing sample and a practice 7th grade Reading SOL in addition to other classwork activities. English teachers will use this information to help plan instruction for the rest of the year.
American Studies:
7th Grade students will be participating in the Ellis Island Simulation on Friday, November 16th. Attached is the
letter that will be sent home with students on October 17th. If you would like to volunteer for this activity, please have your student return the last page of the letter signed to their Social Studies teacher by October 24th.
