Assistant Principal's Message

Yolanda Z. Smingler Assistant Principal

I couldn't be more delighted than to be the assistant principal at Barrett Elementary! I am originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, where I received my bachelor's degree in Psychology and Social Work from the University of Utah and a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Early Child Education at Westminster College. I obtained a degree in Administration from George Mason Education. I've also attended a Summer Institute in Administration at Harvard University.

I began my career in education in Salt Lake City, Utah in public schools where I worked for fourteen years as an elementary teacher. I followed my husband overseas where I worked for the American Schools in Greece. After our tour in Greece we moved to Bellville, Illinois where I truly enjoyed implementing my expertise in early child education as an administrator/ Director of a private day care facility.

I was so thrilled to join Arlington Public Schools in 1993 but more so when I was assigned to Barrett Elementary a year later. In my career as an educator in Arlington Public Schools I have been given the opportunity to successfully assume different roles; Kindergarten Teacher, ESOL/HILT Teacher, Principal Designee, ESOL/HILT Coordinator, Test Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Principal during Summer School.

I feel that in my role as an administrator by helping teachers be more effective in their teaching of mathematics, reading and other educational areas, I have indirectly helped many students achieve success. My belief that all children can learn and achieve at high levels, and my love for children, their families, and their diverse cultures have contributed to my success as an educator.

Every year, with great pleasure, I look forward to getting to know and welcoming new students and their families to our warm and caring community at Barrett!
