Watching for Irritability in ADHD
ADHD Parent Support Network Meeting Kick-Off

Thursday, October 16, 2014:  7:00pm to 8:30pm
Syphax Education Center at Sequoia Plaza
2110 Washington Boulevard, Rooms 101/103/105, Arlington, VA  22204
Guest Speaker:    Kenneth E. Towbin, M.D.
Chief of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
                              National Institute of Mental Health

Most people asked to describe a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) might use words like forgetful, restless, impulsive, disorganized, and disruptive. Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) are studying an important, but little-understood, feature seen in many children with ADHD: irritability. What is emerging from this work is that adults trying to help children with ADHD should think about whether irritability is present and, if so, how severe.  Research is also beginning to offer clues about brain mechanisms underlying irritability, and about new ways to approach treatment.

About the Presenter:  Dr. Towbin is Chief of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Emotion and Development Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health Intramural Research Program. The group with which he is affiliated focuses its research on identifying and treating childhood bipolar disorder and severe irritability in children. His interests include emotional dysregulation in children and adolescents, bipolar disorder, tic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and pervasive developmental disorders.

Registration is requested.  Register online.
