Yorktown High School is committed to educating students to make healthy choices in all areas of their lives. The school's educational program, and school-wide program in social-emotional learning, strive to educate students on the importance of good decision making.
Yorktown's health curriculum covers the topics of drug and alcohol education and prevention. Guest speakers, occasional assemblies and school counselors assist in educating students on these topics.
There are currently two part-time licensed substance abuse counselors at Yorktown. Milagros Mascones-Gatski works at the school 1/2 days a week and focuses on assessment and presentations. Laurel 0smer-Cerrud works 1 1/2 days a week at Yorktown, and focuses on communication and individual, group and parent meetings.
Laurel Osmer Cerrud received her undergraduate degree from American University with a Major in Sociology Honors and Minor in Spanish. She did a series of practicums integrating her language and social service skills. She also lived abroad in Ecuador. Ms. Osmer Cerrud has an ongoing interest in working with students from varying backgrounds and is a strong supporter of bilingual education. She got her graduate degree in Social Work from The National School of Social Service at The Catholic University of America. Ms. Osmer Cerrud has worked in many settings within the DC Metro Area; including mental health clinics, schools, substance abuse treatment facilities and the local juvenile detention center. She maintains clinical licensure. Currently, she continues to do some private practice work within a local agency.

Milagros Vascones-Gatski received her undergraduate degree from la Universidad Catolica de Peru. She then attained a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Ms. Vascones-Gatski has worked in both private and public settings with children, adults and families. She has worked on both mental health and substance use concerns. She maintains clinical licensure. Ms. Vascones-Gatski has done private practice work, as well.
