Three Arlington Schools Receive Purple Star Designation

In addition to Veterans Day, November is the national recognition month for honoring our military families. This is the perfect time to celebrate our military-friendly schools!

The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Schools earning the award receive a certificate of recognition from the Virginia Council, a Virginia Purple Star commemorative coin to display and are listed as a Purple Star school on the VDOE Military Families webpage.   Congratulations to our three newly designated Distinguished Purple Star Schools!

  • Innovation Elementary School
  • Washington-Liberty High School
  • Alice West Fleet Elementary School

Discovery Elementary was the first APS school to receive Purple Star designation in 2019.

In 2022, eight additional APS schools received the honor: Arlington Career Center, Arlington Traditional School, Escuela Key Elementary, Hoffman-Boston Elementary, Kenmore Middle School, Oakridge Elementary, Swanson Middle School, and Thomas Jefferson Middle School. With the new Purple Star designations, this brings the total to 12 APS schools with this honor.
