Superintendent’s Nov. 8, 2023 Update

Dear APS Families,

As a reminder, our schools will be closed this Friday in recognition of Veterans Day, and November is also Military Family Appreciation Month. This is an important time for recognition and gratitude to our military community, as we serve over 2,800 students who are connected to the military in Arlington Public Schools.

As we kick off the month, I am also proud to announce that Alice West Feet, Innovation and Washington-Liberty have just earned the Distinguished Purple Star Designation from the Virginia Dept. of Education. Congratulations to those schools, and the staff and families who contribute to ensuring schools are welcoming and supportive of our military students and families. Learn more and view the full list of APS Purple Star schools.

I also wanted to let you know that the annual APS Employee of the Year Awards nomination process is underway! New for this year, every school will submit both a Teacher and Support Employee of the Year. APS will also continue to recognize a division-wide Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher, Leader, and Support Employee of the Year. Every school will conduct their own process to determine who will represent the school. If you’d like to submit a nomination for your school, use this form.  This is a terrific opportunity to acknowledge staff who make a difference.

Enjoy the long weekend.
