Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can a family register their student directly with an online provider?

Families need to go through their student’s counselor to register for a summer virtual course. If they do not do that, APS will not award the student credit.

Can a student retake a course during the summer to raise a grade in a course they took during the school year?

Per Board policy, students can “retake” a virtual version of a course that they took during the school year to earn a higher grade. However, this is at the family’s expense.

What if the student wants to take a course that is not on the approved list?

Prior to enrolling in the course, the counselor should contact the Secondary Education Office (secondaryed@apsva.us) with the name of the course and the provider. If the provider is on the list of VDOE’s approved virtual course providers, the content supervisor for the course in question will need to review the curriculum and verify that it aligns with the Standards of Learning and the APS curriculum.

What happens if the student withdraws from a virtual course after the drop date?

The family will not receive a refund from the provider, and a “W” will be entered for the course on the student’s transcript (and it will appear on their transcript; we cannot remove the course from the transcript if the student drops it after the drop date).

What happens if a student forgets/neglects to drop a class and, for whatever reason, does not finish the course?

The student will receive the grade earned in the class (E). The course and the failing grade will be reported on the student’s transcript.

Will APS pay for the virtual course(s) that students take during the summer?

The only virtual courses offered through the Office of Secondary Education are new-work-for-credit and as such, families are responsible for payment.

What is the difference between taking a course in Virtual Virginia versus Edgenuity?

All courses offered through Virtual Virginia are synchronous with a teacher providing live instruction. Each course has a set time that it meets Monday through Friday. Students are expected to log in to each session. Students who miss multiple class sessions will be withdrawn from the course. Virtual Virginia enrollment dates are fixed, and students cannot be enrolled after the window closes. Edgenuity courses are asynchronous, and there is a more flexible enrollment policy.

How long should I plan to work on my class each day?

Students should plan to work 4-5 hours per day, 5 days per week in order to complete the course due to the compressed time of the summer session.
